HEY KIDS!!!!!!
IF YOU LIKE THE MIXES PLEASE LEAVE COMMENTS.
THERE'S A LOT OF WORK GONE IN SO IT'S ONLY POLITE!!!!!!
I started DJing in the mid 80's. No idea why..or how i knew how to do it..You have to bear in mind there were virtually no magazines or radio shows about djs or dance music..there were no mix cds or t'internet, I just knew I should be mixing records!
The most important step for me was North East club Philmores where I was resident for several years alongside Jason Bushby. I got the job after making a mix tape using 2 home hi-fis, dusters as slipmats and putting the speakers under a duvet, recording it on a ghettoblaster!!
It soon became a mecca for the new movement of ravers and was perfect timing for the new e-culture..playing detroit, acid, indie, italian piano, balearic, hip hop, disco and house which all somehow worked perfectly and i spent many nights playing to hooded wallabee wearing ravers singing along and crying to Frankie Knuckles, Kariya and Sister Sledge!
I played in some amazing venues and underground parties the like of which will never be seen again
As the music turned to breakbeats, pianos and hoovers, philmores became legendary and attracted people nationwide. Jason took on mc-ing most nights. we went to 3 nights a week and i ended up sometimes playing an 8 hour set!
I guested all over, organised my own nights and raves and I ended up resident on Smokey Joe's radio show on Wear FM.
My love for the 4/4 beat though took me to a club called The Orbit in Morley and i fell back in love with all things electronic, either playing the stuff out or going to see the likes of Jeff Mills, Dave Clarke, Luke slater, Advent etc etc.
However I was to be sucked back into the world of house music!
I managed a friend's record shop then opened my own which was the best couple of years of my working life...music 9-5...It wasn't to last though as less and less people were dj-ing or buying vinyl.
Won a few dj competitions, got a couple of mixes played on Galaxy and got a dozen records out!!
After a few very happy and messed up years at the Empire / Box office and the Purple Onion i've spent the last couple of years at Absolute bar and the newly refurbished Onyx.
I don't see any point in name dropping who i've worked with, I feel lucky to have dj-ed and partied with some of the best in the business.
I've played at well over 200 venues over the last 2 decades and I think the reason i've been going this long is the fact i know how to play to a crowd. There's no ego involved, I just enjoy playing stuff and love it when people enjoy it too.
I still spend all my life immersed in music. It's my passion, I'm always trying to find everything before anyone else and I still get excited every time I hear something new i like, whether its a day or 40 years old so I do't think I'll ever give up on this life!
Throughout all these years i've also had a great love for and been gathering together the best collection of disco, soul, original breaks and funk there is to be had on vinyl....Sometimes some of my other personalities, Justin Credible/Duncan Disorderly and Phil Harmonic get a chance to escape and indulge themselves but it's a rare treat normally kept for a guilty pleasure at home!
