As a child, Ocaso grew up in a household where music was always playing. Whether it was the radio or records, he was exposed to a variety of music which included Classic Rock, Jazz, Disco, and some Pop. Often times he was found digging through his parent’s vinyl collection and listening with headphones at the age of 5. Fast forward to the age of 10, he felt the need to join the school band in order to learn more about music and music structure. Throughout the ‘90s Alternative Rock and Electronic music came into play. Once he was in high school, he picked up a bass guitar and attempted to start a band with a few neighborhood friends. After that didn’t work out, he was stuck on Electronic music and wanted to get into Dj-ing, but that was all too expensive for him to start at that time. So, he continued to listen to what ever sounded good to his ears. Eventually, it was time to focus more on a path towards an actual career. Architecture and Design felt like the right thing to do because it was a way to channel his creativity.
While attending college, pursuing a degree in architecture, the fraternity he was in threw some parties and eventually hired a Dj to spin at one. Due to the budget they had, it wasn’t something they could have at every party. So with the interest of another fraternity brother, they decided to take it upon themselves and be the Djs for future parties. It turned out to be a success and that prompted Ocaso to finally purchase some good equipment to use. He began messing around with some tracks and decided that he wanted more. He began making mix CDs and handing them out to anyone who’d take them. Upon seeing the reactions and hearing the compliments from partygoers; it solidified his interest to go further.
Upon graduation, he had the free time on weekends to frequent clubs like Sullivan Room, Cielo and Pacha in NYC more often and really focus in on a vibe and a sound that felt like a better path to venture down. Ocaso continuously practiced in the evening hours when his work day was over. He says, “I’m having some fun with this in my free time and I’m making the best of it.” Over the past year or so, he started to post monthly mixes online and got some positive feedback, even an opportunity to Dj at a popular Brooklyn club. He’s been sticking to exposing the likes of quality House, Tech House, Deep & Progressive House music around, keeping it alive and well despite the constant opposition he encounters on Long Island.
Recently, he’s been concerned with the way the economy has been affecting his daytime job as a project manager in architecture. Now may be a time for him to push a bit harder to solidify a residency somewhere as well as to find better opportunities towards getting more exposure to people who love the music. Ocaso has said, “So, who knows where I'll end up because tomorrow is another day where anything can happen? For me, it's exciting to feel the energy and express it through music.”
