Nato come musica per le chill-out rooms (o camere di decompressione) frequentate dopo iRave party da chi voleva riprendersi da "eccessi" di vario genere, il Chillout si è evoluto fino a diventare un fenomeno musicale di un certo spessore. È assai diffuso nei club parigini. Musica introspettiva e dal beat lento, rigorosamente realizzata con sonorità elettroniche, una sorta di new age che oggi si sposa bene anche con altri suoni come la Lounge e l'Ethno beat.Grazie ai contributi di vari artisti, come ad esempio José Padilla, e al Café del Mar di San Antonio, è nata negli anni Novanta una moda che si è trasferita in poco tempo in tutto il mondo in migliaia di locali ed è servita a lanciare il suono chillout su larga scala. Del genere vengono pubblicate alcune compilation, tra queste quelle omonime prodotte dal Café del Mar, famosissimo locale di Calabernardo,[1][2] le compilation "Buddha Bar", e quelle della Tarifa Records.
