I doubt there are any rules regarding what can or can't use, genre-wise, for Burlesque. Whatever goes with whatever's being presented, that's what gets used as musical accompaniment. It's a fun genre too in its own, given the wide range of musical styles.
You'll find serious music alongside tongue-in-cheek, corny songs. Some follow what you may consider a predictable path or overall tone, complete with cue points for 'dramatic' timing. Of course, it's very evocative, and suggestive by its very nature. Maybe you can picture a dancer moving about, and then it leads into erotica.
Now it's also generating a new sub-genre of House. So, is it about to spread its wings further? You never know.
There is something else too. This is becoming a fairly popular regime for keep fit, and as an alternative to dance-style aerobics. And, it's also picking up male participants. Maybe I'll take it up? Well... if it keeps you feeling good and keeping you fit.....
Blame my younger sisters for this. They ask, brother must do. (You know how it goes.) This forms part of a series, not linked musically, which we (meaning they) decided to call "Familie Reisen". (They were trying to find something to match a road trip we've just returned from - to Germany.)
