Introduction:

"Disco Music" - the music of a generation made popular by the Latino, gay and Phychedlic communities of the late 1960's and early 1970's.

The Philadelphia Story:

The Philadelphia Sound is a style of soul music characterized by funk influences and lush instrumental arrangements, often featuring sweeping strings and piercing horns. The subtle sound of a vibraphone can often be heard in the background of Philly soul songs. The genre laid the groundwork for disco and what are now considered Quiet Storm and smooth jazz by fusing the R&B rhythm sections of the 1960s with the Pop Vocal tradition, and featuring a slightly more pronounced jazz influence in its melodic structures and arrangements.  Unlike today's Dance Music or the Euro Disco sounds of the 1970's, "The Philly Style" is often with very short introductions making it much harder to mix in.  To feature all the tracks I wanted and still make the mix sound good you will find some tracks mixed and others simply brought in radio style.  I think you'll still enjoy the mix regardless, as these tracks are just the best of the best.  Enjoy the memories!

Featured in this mix are the talents of:

Peter Brown:

an American artist, songwriter and record producer. He grew up in a Chicago suburb and gave us three big Disco Hits.  Late in 1977, TK Records announced that sales of the 12” version of "Do Ya Wanna Get Funky With Me" had reached the million dollar mark making it the first gold 12” single in history.  Before too long the album went gold as well.

Barry White:

born Barry Eugene Carter (September 12, 1944 – July 4,2003,was an American composer and singer-songwriter.
A two-time Grammy Award-winner known for his distinctive bass voice and romantic image, White's greatest success came in the 1970s as a solo
singer and with the Love Unlimited Orchestra, crafting many enduring soul, funk, and disco songs such as his two biggest hits, "You're the
First, the Last, My Everything" and "Can't Get Enough of Your Love,Babe." Along with Isaac Hayes, White is considered by Allmusic.com as a
pioneer of disco music in the early 1970s.

First Choice:

First Choice was an American girl group vocal music trio from Philadelphia. The group produced the disco hits "Armed and Extremely
Dangerous", "Smarty Pants", "The Player", "Love Thang", "Let No Man Put Asunder" and "Dr. Love". They were signed to soul label Philly Groove
Records and to disco label Salsoul Records. The group was influential to early house and techno music, because of samplingBrothers,[2][3] mostly from First Choice's 1983 track, "Let No Man Put
Asunder.

"McFadden and Whitehead:

McFadden and Whitehead were an American songwriting, production, and recording duo, best known for their signature tune "Ain't No Stoppin'
Us Now". They wrote and produced some of the most popular R&B hits of the 1970s, and were primarily associated with Gamble and Huff's
Philadelphia International soul music record label.

Phyllis Hyman:

Phyllis Linda Hyman (July 6, 1949 – June 30, 1995) was an American singer-songwriter and actress. On the afternoon of June 30, 1995, Hyman committed suicide by
overdosing on pentobarbital and secobarbital in the bedroom of her New York City apartment at 211 West 56th Street. She was found unconscious
at 2pm, hours before she was scheduled to perform at the Apollo Theater and died three hours later at St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital.

Candi Staton:

Candi Staton is an American soul and gospel singer, best known for her 1970 remake of Tammy Wynette's "Stand By Your Man"
and her 1976 disco hit "Young Hearts Run Free".

Karen Young:

Karen Young (March 23, 1951-January 26, 1991) was a disco singer best known for her hit "Hot Shot". Well-known for her ability to scat-sing
and deliver vocals with ferocious energy, Young was also a gifted pianist and songwriter.Karen Young grew up in a Northeast Philadelphia, Pennsylvania rowhouse.
Before becoming an overnight international recording star with "Hot Shot," she recorded jingles and background vocals for
Philadelphia-based production companies. She died unexpectedly of a bleeding ulcer.

Teddy Pendergrass:

Theodore DeReese "Teddy" Pendergrass (March 26, 1950 – January 13, 2010 was an American R&B/soul singer and songwriter. Pendergrass first rose to fame as lead singer of Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes in
the 1970s before a successful solo career at the end of the decade. In 1982, he was severely injured in an auto accident in Philadelphia, resulting in his being paralyzed from the waist down. After his injury,
he founded the Teddy Pendergrass Alliance, a foundation that helps those with spinal cord injuries.

Loleatta Holloway

Loleatta Holloway (November 5, 1946 – March 21, 2011) was an American singer, mainly known for disco songs such as "Hit and Run" and "Love Sensation", both of which have been sampled extensively. Her voice is still legendary.

Andrea True

Andrea True (July 26, 1943 – November 7, 2011) was an American adult film star and singer from the disco era. She is best known for the 1976 disco tune, "More, More, More", which
peaked at #4 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and #5 on the UK Singles Chart. In 1977.  Her second hit was the very flirty "What's Your Name, What's Your Number," which peaked at No.34.  Before her death in 2011 she had spent the last 25 years as a counselor for drug and substance abusers.
