My Bio
Matt Barker first started cutting up tracks and mixes at the ripe old age of six, chopping up segments of music, stuttering and looping what could loosely be called 'samples' using nothing more than a couple of conventional tape recorders and the family record player. About the same time, he got his first keyboard from Santa. He hated the music lessons his parents made him do, but loved making his own compositions, creating his own synth patch sounds and blending them all together in a unique way. This was way before he (or the rest of the world) even knew what house music was.
With the consumer boom of home computers in the late 1980s, Matt was first exposed to an 8 bit sampler and the cult music sequencer NoiseTracker on the Commodore Amiga. Coincidentally, by the early Nineties the underground rave scene was burgeoning, and aloof artists such as SL2 and Altern-8 proved that you didn't need to have a famous face and or a music mogul behind you to make accessible music. Matt bought a couple of keyboards and progressed into full-on MIDI production. By the time he bought his first turntables the music theory he hated so much meant he already knew how to beat-match and align harmonics. Matt got himself a DJ residency in Hull and this was getting good....
Artists such as BT and Way Out West, blending breaks, trance and house elements with traditional arrangments, greatly inspired Matt, In 1996, he recorded a series of mixsets, under the banner of 'Synthesis'. One of these showcased his debut demo track, 'Earthquake in Eden'. He needed a suitable psuedonym to use, so he chose Epicentre. The rest is history.
Initially focussing on his own material, the Epicentre moniker developed his unique style of merging progressive house, breakbeat, electro and accoustic sounds, which has seen him remix on a wide range of genres. Epicentre helped define the cult status of the bands Mardrae and Arcade beyond their mainstream fanbase, whilst collaborating with likeminded DJs and producers such as Phil Urry of the Shine Boys in the UK and Joel North of Miami's Radio Danz.
The last two years have seen a renaissance in Epicentre productions. He has garnered interest from as far away as Asia and North America, moved into film-making and is an avid digital artist. Recently, Epicentre mixsets have been broadcast on the UK-based music station Summer Time Radio. The Gulf Stream Electro Mix, followed by the Miami Winter Music Conference Mix, were broadcast on Radio Danz in Miami, fusing a selection of quality electro tracks with a multitude of Epicentre compositions. Most recently, Barker has collaborated with DJ Alirumba of Sexylectro fame to form the remix partnership Seismic Waves.

Joel North is a top guy. A few of the tracks I heard Joel drop on Radio Danz, some others are up and coming tunes from local heroes who deserve a plug. Very upfront electro house, with a lot of samples, acappellas, synths and plugins added to spice up the proceedings and ensure the roof is blown off. Expect the unexpected. 01. Amongst these is a collaboration with Radio Danz DJ and Producer Joel North on a remix for the indie band Lovespirals, a few exclusives from UK DJ Phil Urry of Sexylectro, and a world premiere of an Epicentre remix of a track by Everything But The Girl. If this isn't enough, the mix also kicks off with the first in the series of Golden Ticket remixes - which rework some of the classic dance tracks from the last 15 years of anthems. 01). To me, he'd be playing this. This has been a pet project of mine for the last 6 years, adding the odd track here, the odd sample there. Originally, it was never supposed to see the light of day and was just a nostalgic laugh for my mate Brett, to put together our favourite tracks from some hazy nights listening to Pete Tong and the Essential Mixes, clubbing at Deja Vu in the mid-90s or simply driving round in our dad's cars with the windows down. I also have some amazing old skool megamix CDs from back in the day (Hit the Decks and especially the Groovy Ghetto 'All The Rage' Megamix). My aim was to beat 44 tracks on the 'All The Rage' mix – I passed that after 30 minutes. Slowly, this has grown into a monster. It would be impossible to cram every tune in there (I remembered 3 more after I'd finished it), but in places it feels that way. The mix actually ages as it goes along. Skip the first 12 minutes if you want as this is the early stuff recorded 6 years ago now and sounds just like any other mixset to begin with. The really meaty, manic treats come later on. Multiple tracks, accappellas, loops, samples and madness running straight from one track to the next and back again- by the end I'm actually remixing rather than playing tunes. Those that I've played this to over the years have urged me to finish this off (“you CAN'T leave it there!”), so I'm really pleased to have locked it down. Even after all these years it still sends goosebumps down my spine. So many quality moments, quality memories.... So here we are. To coincide with the Old Skool Classics night at Deja Vu this weekend (Biggus and EZC on deck duty), Summer Time Radio are broadcasting this as a warm up to their regular Sunday shows. When listening for the first time, you'll no doubt miss some of the tracks, so there's a SECOND broadcast the following Sunday, 14th December, at the same time, same station. Me and Brett are 16 again (give us a call mate...). TRACKLISTINGS: http://www.fileden.com/files/2007/1/24/685808/Rewind%20Mix%20Tracklistings.pdfThe 2k7 MiX - Autumn Winter by EpicentreuploadedWell, into 2008 now. I've put together over 100 minutes of quality tunes, which I've sliced, diced and remixed over the last six months. Most of the tracks on here have been modified a bit to the normal cuts, so see if you can spot the difference. 2007 was definitely the year of 'Retro Electro' - contemparary remixes of classic tunes - which continues where the first mix left off really, but with things getting much more electro with this mixset. There's more original Epicentre content, as well as an exclusive remix of Best of You by the Foo Fighters and one by Imogen Heap to finish things off. There are also a few acappellas thrown in and some fun with samples and plugins along the way. TRACKLISTING 01. Hopper - 'If' (Acappella) 02. Seal - 'Amazing' (Kaskade Remix) 03. The music thing has really taken off this year, with me spending more time in the studio and in the clubs than I ever have. Anyways, as is customary for me, here's my end of year mixset. It's actually only part one (the majority was recorded back in June), as I've had so many tunes to get through. Things start proper with a remix from me and are all things house before going a bit trancey towards the end, finishing with a fantastic tune by Hybrid and John Graham/Quivver. 01. 3D - 'The Party At The End Of The World' 02. See you on the other side :)digital tapestry by EpicentreuploadedMy Magnus Opus of Mixsets. There is a LONG story behind this mix, but suffice to say if I told you I tried to put this together back in 1998 using a 4-track mixer on ferric tape, with a guitar pedal hooked up to my decks to manually add the filters and sweeps, you'll understand there's some heritage behind it. Several months later I bought a minidisc player and suddenly I had digital quality sound. I became quite dapper in chopping and splicing whole segments, as well as adding layers to tracks like never before. The mix therefore acquired a name – 'Digital Tapestry' – and it's been a monkey on my back ever since. Ever the perfectionist, I never quite got round to finishing it. Years went by and I acquired hardware, software, plugins and sequencers, but life got in the way and I chose to forget about it. The dust gathered (not that it does on digital recordings obviously), and only in the light of the current fad in retro mixes did I think finally think stuff it and put the pieces together.
