The Funhouse opened in 1979 and lasted until 1985. The founders of the club came out of the same outer boroughs Italian and Jewish milieu that had fostered the beginnings of New York dj culture (see Tim Lawrence’s excellent book Love Saves the Day for more on this topic) and produced Studio’s founders Steve Rubell and Ian Schrager.

Funhouse’s owners Joe, Ronnie, Jerry and Vinnie were initially interested in starting up a gay club but when they failed to attract the crowd they were looking for, the Funhouse was opened to a mixed crowd from the outer boroughs who came out in large numbers, remaining loyal to the club for years.

The size and decor of The Funhouse were special from the first moment it opened. The space approached a gargantuan 30,000 square feet with several areas within the club, including a dance floor that could fit 1000 people, a raised dance area that held several hundred more, a long narrow balcony area surrounding the floor, an arcade stocked with popular video games such as Pac Man and Space Invaders, pinball machines and even a bumper car ride. There was an ice cream parlor and a pizzeria on site too.

The dance floor itself was overseen by the DJ booth, which was situated inside a giant replica of a clown’s head featuring a light up red nose and glowing yellow eyes. The DJ could be seen inside the clown’s mouth. Spaced out dancers loved to watch themselves reflected in mirrored pillars that intermittently spotted the floor. Randy Murray ran a spectacular lightshow that former Funhouse heads still talk about even today.

These were just a few of the sounds played each weekend at the club and throughout the streets of New York and it's outer boroughs during that era.
