My introduction to deep house and all things free party couldn't have been better - 1994 and Smokescreen Sound system. As soon as I heard that first mix tape and knew I'd found what I'd been looking for musically at last! After going to club nights, parties and shindigs in secret locations for about 8 years I knew although I loved getting on down to that deep groove, that I wanted to participate by laying down the wax. So then in 2001/2 I embarked on an adventure with dual CD decks at first for a year - what an apprenticeship that was! Citronix decks with just 2 buttons per deck for cueing backwards and forwards - no jog wheel! What a nightmare! However, after actually getting that to work after a year, when I then bought my first pair of Technics 1200 Mk 2's, mixing was so much easier and came naturally after all the messing about pressing cue buttons! Next I had to find someone to let me play. That's where my dear friend Carl Kaotic and Wireless Sound system came in - and I am indebted to Carl for all time for being open enough and cool enough to let me play my first free party sometime around 2003 - even though he had never heard me play. I had recognised an Akufen tune he had dropped at the Rockhouse in Derby and I think he was quite impressed I knew the artist. After the first free party I never looked back - having been lucky enough to play some great venues around england with different sound systems and also in Czech with Lincoln based Rugkutta Sound system. I still love to get out on the dancefloor when I'm not playing, love to dance to deep grooves, which anyone that comes to Wireless parties will readily confirm. It's such a cool time for deep house. many amazing producers, DJs, radio shows, opportunities, sound systems, availability of so much music you'll never get to hear it all - really awesome stuff too. I can't write this without paying homage to the Rockhouse Smokescreen soundsystem nights during the nineties - The best nights I ever experienced. The vibe was off the wall, a totally eclectic crowd, but no trouble, really cool and funny people, dancing on the speakers, going behind the decks to ask fran yet again 'what was the name of that last tune?... and he never told me to piss off, bless him :) might have called me a tune spotter a few times though. But who could blame me, those nights rocked everyone's socks off and there will never ever be quite another venue and night like it. Thanks - To the originators of the groove, all the big names, thanks to Smokescreen, the DJs, the other groovers on the dancefloor and Kaotic for letting me get involved. I've had some brilliant times and still have brilliant nights and days now... Thanks also to my partners in Crime Judd of the '2 Js'. We once had an all night session in his garage with a smoke machine and lights, got totally carried away and the Fire service got called out by a neighbour who was convinced his garage was on fire. No, it was just the 2 of us who were on fire that night! And a thank you and shout out to my other partner in crime JKRich. Thanks for all the sessions at your house on only 1FM and housemasters radio - and for providing me with a sofa to collapse on in the early hours after too much indulgence! What a life, what a laugh, what a scene. God bless you all...
