DMT14 contest mix.  I have a lot to say about this one.

I haven't done a Discogs contest mix since 2004.  I thought a lot about this one and thought I might have had a chance at winning.  I really didn't know who I was dealing with.  I thought these people involved in the contest were those who post in Bunker's Oldskool forum and the Mixes forum.  Both forums on discogs have _very_ nice and helpful people.  In reality, the people involved with DMT14, the ones submitting and grading the mixes, were not from those forums appart from Kleez-one, and Rubsilent (two very awesome rave vinyl collectors).  No these people were from the Chat forum.

The Chat forum in the past has wound up people like Frankie "Bones" Mitchell and even wound up a member so much he committed suicide!  These Chat forum people are the nastiest people on the Discogs forum, they have no appreciation for anything "old skool" because most of them aren't even 30 years old (if they are, they certainly don't act like it).

So not knowing this my contest mix was defeated before it was even created, I went ahead with my "brilliant" idea.

I had a whole fictional plot for this mix...  "The year was 1991, Grooverider was hired to play a 1991 rave that featured only techno music.  He was asked to play a _techno_ set, not a hardcore set.  Raymond the Grooverider being who he is said sure but he wouldn't just play techno.  Raymond clearly has a plan to develope the techno sound into what would be known as drum and bass so he would sneak in as many cross over tunes as possible while dropping fresh dubplates as he usually does."

That is something that makes this mix stand out from other sets that usually get uploaded.  Not only did I play records that I had just got in the mail but I made remixes of some of them.  This really hasn't been done much since 1992!  No bedroom DJ collector (appart from DJ NEE) makes remixes of records he owns to play in a set.  I thought this was really cutting edge.  So for this set I remixed Resistance D "Approach & Identify" as well as this tune I had just heard X "Adjuta" which blew my mind (thanks Kleez One).  I also included a tune I made in 2005 that I never put in a set online as the end tune.

I put a great deal of effort into this mix, more then anyone else, and all I have to show for it is a bunch of lousy comments on soundcloud.

Heres some choice nasty comments:

~~Janne Rasi says at 54:55: This mix is pretty good technically and I can see why friends of old school rave stuff are liking this. But there wasn't much creativity or diversity to keep me interested. There were some ace tracks but also too many that sounded dated and cheesy. 5,5/10.

~~Zubeldia says at 47:02: decent to excellent mixing, but hardly anything in here i can listen to/appreciate style-wise. never been a fan of early to mid-90's rave/ techno etc. 6.3/10

~~verdant-recordings says at 16:18: this is an easy one to guess who the DJs but sshhhh! I wish i could mix like this, but i have developed my taste from out of the early 90s sound now and want hear some thing a more (dare is say) relevant, i dont mind a few bits dropped from time to time but this is too much. 7.50/10

~~ Posted 1 month ago1 month Reply ImNotDedYet says at 57:13: really fun mix reminding me of my old rave days. Good, solid transitions although a bit tiring about 2/3 in - at least to me. 8/10

~~Pujd says at 1:00:32: Good tunes cut up in classic old school style (and some cheesy bits too), but what's new here from what Mark Archer did 22 years ago? 6/10 from me.

~~MikeHoliday says at 27:21: I'm divided on the track selection here, I like the older techno but some of the synth heavy stuff is a little cheesy for me. Nice mixing and nice cuts. 8/10

Needless to say, I'm not partaking in any future DMT14 Contests.  I'm not even sure how much longer I want to keep at this hobby as a whole.

At least my favorite collector liked my mix:

~~kleez.one says at 53:10: love what you did with the X (7) "Who Is Ajuta?" (Dub - Played from CDR) 2014, i play this tune once in a while to,got a great vibe this tune!

Something else that is starting to bother me.  I've been watching a lot of Twitch and Youtube gaming videos.  These guys broadcasting game videos are actually making money based on viewers.  What am I doing wrong here?  Why am I not making money on DJ Mix listen/downloads, at least from the advertising content that spams these pages?  Something is not right here!  These pages like Soundcloud make the content provider PAY, and this site begs for donations.  What is wrong here?  I should be getting paid for providing this valuable content.

Maybe its time for a complete hobby change.  Neo-Geo MVS, Pinball, and Cycling seem like a lot more fun.
