JAH SHABBY [APPX.90 MINS]

Sunsets and Strangers.

"Five years ago, I quit drinking.

Within weeks, I lost my love of music.

You can understand, I’m sure, why I thought the two might be connected.

I still listened, I still liked bits and pieces, but it was a faint echo of the gut-pit rush that had previously defined the joy I found in music. There were rare occasions on which I thought I felt it coming back, but for every inland flow, there was an ebb that left me empty.

Recently, I played records with an old friend of mine, back-to-back and step-in-step at a beautiful venue in Margate over looking the sea - Faith in Strangers. It was my first time behind the decks for years, and I realised it wasn’t drink I’d been missing, it was communion.

The crowd was small but attentive… open to it. We were keen to repay their trust but, given our combined collections, we weren’t able to offer much they knew.

So we didn’t.

Instead, we built a set out of shared touchstones and recognisable backdrops, changing up rhythm and tempo as the feedback from the crowd dictated. A proper conversation.

So this mix - these mixes - were made with all of this in mind. One side to soundtrack the spectacular sunsets of the north Kent coast, the other for what comes after.

While different, both have the same ethos at their core. Familiar themes, cover versions and edits are intended as open-armed points of entry. Embedded within lesser-known companion pieces, these are tunes that try to make the night about “us” rather than "them".

Because, ultimately, that's what it’s all about, right? Connection, togetherness... an act of communion."
