Funky House Als
Records vinyl mix. 1998-2002

Had a mix – decided to dig in my 2000’s and afterwards
noticed that most memories attached to the records are due it being around the
time I was doing a bit of djing; 1998-2002ish. Bars and parties across London.

Tracklist:

1.       DJ Pierre a.k.a. The Don ‎– Switch 2001

                Always
used this for my opener for mix tapes, would mix out over the “are you ready” when
it comes in, this time though mixed out just before it comes in.

2.       Rhythm Masters ‎– The Mutator E.P.

                F’’cking
love this tune; makes me dizzy. Didn’t play it our much cos it felt too ‘hard’.
Never been able to work out what the bloke says in the breakdown.

3.       Rollerblade ‎– (When I've Done) My First
Hit

                Ah,
Italy purchase – from Crazy Disco in Sorrento, great record shop – first
holiday with my now wife. Bit of an iffy chop just before I mix it in.

4.       Dopeheadz ‎– Do My Very Best

                Another
favourite – really surprised how much this goes for now, even though it wasn’t
rare. Don’t remember anyone else playing it, or commenting on it. Apparently,
it’s Garage according to discogs. Na, House Music. Not the best mix in!

5.       Triple X ‎– Feel The Same

                A £2.00
record. If you know what that means, drop me a line. This gets stuck in my head
for days.

6.       Plastika ‎– Disco Dancing

                Always always
used this as a warm up record, but the other side! This is a much more pumping
mix.

7.       Black Legend ‎– You See The Trouble With Me

                This,
along with the next one, was one of those “had this months ago” when it
appeared in the charts. Paid a tenner for it! They re-sung/recorded the record
not using Barry’s voice due to licensing or somesuch – it was bloody awful!

8.       Solar ‎– Jet Groove

                I am
sure that this was out way before Spillar & Sophie EB released theirs. But
on reading that mighty oracle (!) discogs, this was released in 2002 and
“Groove Jet” was first released by Spillar as an instrumental in 1999, then S
EB did her version in 2000. So long story even longer, I reckon this was
released between the two Spillar versions. Does anyone apart from me really
care about this!

9.       Kid Creme ‎– Hypnotising

                Great
tool and sample in this. Massive record at the time, even though it’s only really
a tool. Was a period that a lot of 90s samples were being re-used (yes, it’s an
80s Soul record, but at the time I only knew about early 90s House). Following
record is in a similar vain.

10.   4 Star Clowns ‎– Feel So Good

                This
record killed it for me and funky house. I loved it and still do, but: heard it
in Pascha the week after I brought it. Pascha by Victoria station had just
opened. It sounded shit and I was surrounded by dudes with broken English
trying to sell me Es and Coke! Didn’t really go out much dancing to House after
that, was much more Techno. Buy House; dance to Techno!

11.   Infinity Feat. Duane Harden ‎– Sunshine
(When I Dance With You)

                Fond
memories of this record. Clear memory of playing at a party held in a in Vauxhall.
I was on after a hip-hop dj and played as my second record. The room lit up and
the atmosphere lifted instantly, which was needed after the hop-hop. After my
set the memory is hazy; kinda remember walking to Elephant & Castle to a
random house party. Thanks for taking my records home Chris!

12.   The Filta Freekz ‎– Good Time

                Simple
loopy Disco House that I would use to transition between styles. Hypnotizing;
another one that gets stuck on loop in my brain.

13.   ATFC - Different Strokes

                One of
only a few records my bro said was pukka. Which always made me smile afterwards
cos he likes treble and I like bass - we’re the same colour! The tribalness to
this great.

14.   Del Gado* ‎– Coffee Beats

A staple. The drums and wait for the baseline drop is
perfect for me. Like to use as a mood lifter.
