I had been buying a lot more 1992 deep house records the spring of 2011. I usually just buy 1992 UK 'Ardkore records but I was getting a bit sick of it (plus they are way over priced on Discogs.com). The house records from 1992 have pretty much the same sounds as the 'Ardkore stuff only with a much more laid back relaxing groove which depending on mood, can be much more N-JOI-able. At one point I was listening to Masters At Work "When You Touch Me" on my computer and for a split second I thought I was listening to atmospheric jungle. Both Jungle and 'Ardkore ripped off this deep house sound so much, its no wonder I'm into house so much more now.
I had planned to record this mix the week of August 15th 2011 however my Dad had other plans and he went out and died in a motorcycle accident a few days prior. For obvious reasons this destroyed any spirit in me for a long while. I managed to get enough energy to do this on November 11th. I added Martha Wash's "Carry On" to the pile of records that had been sitting on the floor since August 1st and used that as an intro. Martha Wash's "Carry On" was actually written about Gay pride however in this case its about moving on from the death of my Father which makes the song personally moving. The last track, Loni Clark's Rushing is more of the same theme and is the perfect closer to how I was and still am feeling (extremely depressed but hoping the wheel of life picks me back up on its spokes). Its summer time now however in my mindset, it hasn't been summer since August 12th 2011 and never will be summer again untill if I manage to find a replacement family member. Well as in the movie TED I must paraphrase the Thunder Song: "Fuck you Harley Davison, You can suck my dick!"
As for the mix, it's a sick 1992 era deep house mix that should be uplifting and fun to listen to dispite how it came to be. The mix between Donna Summer "I Feel Love" and Eddie S. "The Spell" was awesome and symbolic how it blended 1977 with 1992. However it was a bitch of a mix that took well over 10 takes to get perfect since the music technology in 1977 could not keep good timing. Another neat thing is that I had just found out the names of two house tracks that I heard on the radio all the time in 1992 but never knew: Black Science Orchestra "Where were you?" and Todd Terry's "Makossa". Both were major staples on late night radio in NY/NJ that influenced my taste in music quite a bit so it was great to put names to them and go out and buy the records. The mix of Masters At Work "The Ha Dance" and Pink Noise "More Energy" was a direct reference and tribute to the awesome set "Super Star DJ Demitri" played at the NASA Rewind event as it was the first time I heard both of those awesome choons. As for the mix title, I was researching the Zanzibar club in Newark NJ a lot spring of 2011. I had heard the Tony Humphries broadcasts from there on Hot 97 in 1992 and I revisited the idea of the place by looking at Youtube videos. I was too young to have gone there and now its gone. The meat of this mix is my best guess at what it might have been like to have been at that magical place.

sad to hear - real shame about your dad - I never knew mine , he left home when I was about 12 months old , never saw him again - i tried to trace him in 2009 - thanks to internet I found out he died aged 72 in 2000 - also found out I had 3 half sisters and one half brother I never knew about - not to mention 18 nephews and 9 nieces !!!! house it - peace
I completely understand my love. My mommie passed away January 15, 2011....and I have as of yet to cry. I think i too am in shock...waiting for the other show to drop...is all, i guess. Keep on pushing babes...you do masterful work, and only you can make your own light shine, in the midst of darkness...they'd want it that way...trust me, love you boo.

Musically we are alike in taste. This is awesome. I used to listen to Tony Humprhies when he was on after Dj red Alert or Chuck Chillout on Kiss FM NYC. On occassion it would be live from Zanzibar. Nice feelin' groove!
