THIS WEEKS MIX:
Being a musical subject particularly close to my heart, I have taken the liberty of attempting to verbally describe what Balearic means to me personally, my own understanding, a somewhat no doubt unconventional interpretation which I will attempt to clarify what this mix was supposed to contain, the feelings it was meant to convey and you can then best decide for yourself if I have managed to pull it off or make a right pigs ear of things???
What is your Balearic? Often mislabelled, misunderstood & misrepresented, (for me) it is a feeling rather than a pigeonhole. Hard to define but not indescribable it instinctively sparks light from itself. At its root it is the candle that emanates away a rooms' prior state of darkness, it can be elusive and fleeting, hard to tie down and consistently adapting to many terrains with ease. It is a beautiful barrage of contrasting noises and feelings, which knows few boundaries in its ongoing excavations to craft cascading, hypnotic, rhythmic soundscapes. Projecting some kind of mental image, not dissimilar to a vintage mad professors’ game of concocted frequential Jenga. It has hidden elements and procedurally it encapsulates the attitude of true Punk & DIY culture, at is DNA it is the emotive wave of the popular and soulful, lost and reimagined. Desert Island sounds for the non-conformists, the lovers, the grinners, the thinkers, the empaths, the risk-takers who can’t resist, and the natural-born swayers who have shunned the big room!
It’s an intricate, expansive landscape positioned between 2 iconic pillars titled Padilla and Weatherall, its sits adjacent and perpendicular, aloft, aloof, and resonant; ebbing & flowing transient forms evolve from inception defying the laws of entropy. It is characteristically warm with tropical sensibilities. An earthy yet otherworldly destination that constantly drifts and transforms operating within the vesica Pisces of 2 concentric circles, and shimmers at the points of connection/s. A place where mutating musical styles meet, mingle, flirt & fuse. It is a place with a foundation of low frequencies that provide depth and texture whilst allowing more angelic noises to echo throughout an ongoing journey to exotic destinations unknown.
It's the oasis where a wide variety of manimals can gather to drink and revive, rest and reflect ethnic and tribal settings, exotic expanding horizons contrasting the beauty of nature with the lesser magic of the sonically propelled ghosts in man-made machines, it's a natural evolution of wonderment, like springs rising from a desert, offering a stark contrast, reflecting a never-ending landscape of morphing, illusive stretching horizons awash with hot sand and searing temperatures. It is the wonderful imagined noises echoing from the oasis in a mirage, the beaches, the hammocks, the bar at sunset, the first coffee of the day to see in a sunrise. It's the moods and feelings of a post-rave generation with nostalgic tendencies. It is in its true form and most organic; it is fundamentally a melting pot, the point of natural convergence, harmony free of chaos. It is full of attitude without being arrogant, it's heavily experimental but not reckless. It starts in one place and travels, floating like an Arabian magic carpet of old tales.
A composite of non-conflicting contradictions that somehow (magically) can sit harmoniously, a carefully crafted melange of moods and feelings, taking influence from everywhere and everything. It’s built on stark contrasts containing a little dash of everything from ambient acoustic and pop elements to punk and harder-edged electronics. It is about taking chances (and managing to pull them off, of course), it’s about mixing up a few well-known classics with a surrounding tapestry of complimentary noises that cohabit and commune with numerous adjacent styles. Often hard-to-deliberate, lesser-known, or hard-to-find releases with a penchant for the mystical, esoteric, and spiritual
It is the 3,6,9 it is the transmutation, the dodecahedron, it is audible alchemy, it is painting pictures with sound and creating ever-evolving textures. It is the essence and spirit of all the summers of love combined from time immemorial and it is the sounds that elevate the soul with ease and finesse in equal measure. It's the flower in the pistol, the peaceful, smiling resistance to the mainstream. It is liberating, rebellious, complex, and nuanced balancing veritable contradictions whilst layering elements constructively to represent something that represents a sum, greater than its parts.
It is full of emotion, passionate and playful in its structure combining conducive moods, tempos, and feelings into a potentially explosive, potentially sedative cocktail of stark contrasts, refined into a synthesis that can transport the mind to destinations both exotic and unknown. It is the Tabula rasa of the sonic crafters, frequential creators, musical sculptors, the refuge of mad men and savants, the projection of a sonic Shambala onto a warm summer evening into any time of day :-)

Think bastard lovechild of Aphex & William Orbit and you are in the right ballpark, FX & glitched elements, cleverly layered and highly refined, processed bleeps, synths, and samples circle each other in a seductive, sometimes slightly sinister manner. techno at its most chilled and experimental with guitars adding a little Latin flavour at the end.

Back into head down and marching on mode and a retro-feel track that reminds me strongly of the world-class wrecking crew in its synthwork and chords. Another proto-electro mid-80s feel, perfectly reconstructed and further enhanced with a cool male vocal in an indietronica meets pop/soul kind of style. Slightly dark and moody with a bit of chug in there.
Nice soulful twist in the second half with guest vocalist adding depth and weight with some slight fleeting almost disco moments, brimming with feel-good emotions.

Off one of my favourite UK labels of recent years but this is much mellower than the majority of their releases. It has a definite old's cool ravers feel to it, great use of sampling which reminds me of the Weatherall remix of Papua New Guinea and it effortlessly incorporates nice spiritual and ethnic elements in choice laidback ambient techno sensibilities.

56.) Digital Versicolor - Glass Candy Off the B/E/A/T/B/O/X LP Label: Italians Do It Better – IDIB005 Format Vinyl, LP Vinyl, with bonus 7", 33 RPM Country: US Released: 2008
A firm fave to end and a final wash of post-punk, neo-wave, minimal to dungeon synth cinematics. Sounds like it could sit well alongside other tracks on a lost John Carpenter LP or the Shogun Assassin soundtrack.
A cool dark and indie infused, Moroder feel, to an emotive beast that just builds and builds as it goes. Cracking authentic warmth and distinctive 80's feel to the production that would surely be well suited to a remake of Scarface (In an imaginary world of course, some flicks should never be copied!)

37.) California Dreamin' (1969) - Today's People Label: Evolution (3) – 2004 Format: Vinyl, LP Country: US Released: 1969
Cool cover and rendition of the hippy classic from the US. Perfectly capturing and retaining the authentic moods and feelings of an entire generation. Brilliant playful yet substantive production that effortlessly switches from moments
- Of fragility against a backdrop of slow-building energy as the track continues. Excellent drum work on the analogue side drives the whole thing to give funky overtones and "clap to the choir" feel
- Lush lo-fi rebellious, spiritually led pop at its best!

38.) Get Out Of My Life Woman (1966) - Tages Off the LP Tages -2 Label: Platina – PALP 3002 Vinyl, LP, Album Country: Sweden Released: Aug 4, 1966
LP version of a big single, but this version is out of Sweden in the mid-60s, maintaining and perpetuating the hippy vibes of the last track as the journey continues. Manages to exude a late 70's rock to mellow garage punk feel in the production sense.

39.) Within You, Within Me - Meltt Label: Nettwerk Music Group – 31462-1 Format: 2 x Vinyl, LP, 45 RPM, Off the Album, Eternal Embers Limited Edition, Numbered, Stereo,

40.) Red - The ivories Self released digital only 2017 US
Dreamy West Coast feel indie/sunshine pop, lifting the mood and layered up in parts with the echoes of the prior sample. Downtempo, feel-good, chamber pop influence and slightly psychedelic elements drift in and out of a poppy infectious guitar-led production

41.) Apiento - Things You Do For Love (Heartbeat) UK 2019 Self Released Digital & Vinyl release on testpressing.org
One of the UKs bossmen at work, head honcho of test pressing blog doing his thing most excellently naturally exuding authentic old's cool moods and feelings with a chilled and laidback slice of retro, perfectly encapsulated via a somewhat more modern recording.
- As ever, nice use of space, echoes, and effects to provide transient pulsating textures from which the samples gently dance in and out with ease. Incorporates clever use of French sample to maximum effect, giving it a back-in-the-day, back room, acid house vibe about it.
-Melodic, Ambient, and Techno all at once, defying traditional pigeon holes and instead remaining a lovely melange of moods and chilled-out feelings that would sound great anywhere seeking to bliss and space things out a little.

42.) Moments Are Passing By - Beta Consciousness off the Synaesthesia CD LP Nyquist 2021 recording 23 release Germany also txt recordings CD Digi release: 2021
Natural, Organic, lo-fi progression perfectly suited to follow on from the above track. Softened bleeps abound against a contrastingly warm bassline, it is drifting, and hypnotic, yet contains meaty understated synth work that seems to reflect cinematic moods and give the effect
- Of a lost soundtrack. A quality production of chilled and intelligent Orbital-like Techno at its best, instantly invoking feelings of nostalgia. An ever-evolving composition and structure that progressively builds and smolders subtly throughout.

43.) Rhymes R Flowing - Sure Shot Groove Label: Basement Division – BD2 T1 Format: Vinyl, 12", 33 RPM Country: Sweden Released: 1989
Original Mantronix proto-electro vibes aplenty in this recreation of an earlier sound derivative, driven along in a spritely fashion complete with US retro-style male rap vocals to give a distinctive mid-80s feel. Pervading sub-bass elements sit over crisp hypnotic, head-nodding drum work.

44.) Ny Subway Session - Valo Off self-released digital-only LP Battle Breaks Cypher US
Bassy, sub-pounding moody, dark, and cinematic with a soundtrack feel to it. Reminds me a little of Nasty Rox inc.
https://valoxxx.bandcamp.com/album/battle-breaks-cypher
45.) It's Ok (It's Not Ok) - Mindchatter Mind of a genius Vinyl Release 2022 US Dream Soup Purple LP
Waves of rhythmic downtempo, and somewhat funky grooves pulsate across this particularly chugging downbeat, synthy, bass-driven electronica, warm, slightly tribal with tropical undertones effervescing effortlessly.

46.) You Float my Boat - Kingbastard Ambidextrous Records Spain (Formerly Glasgow, Scotland) Off the Brainfunk LP 2023
Another track slightly reminiscent of the original Lemon Jelly Productions, with a mid-90s feel to the overall production. Sounds like something Nightmares on Wax might play and also reminds me of the Ballistic Brothers early 90's releases.
features male slightly poppy vocal which works well to carry the track along to maximum effect. Dream-like hypnotics for the enthusiastic head nodders.

47.) Studies (Instrumental) - Toro y Moi - Label:
Company Records (4) – none- Format: Cassette, Album, Stereo, White Shell Country: US Released: Jan 20, 2023
One more instrumental, one more fabulous artist showcasing impressive and intricate instrumentalisation off this splendid LP from the US. Slight Eastern influences pervading.
https://toroymoi.bandcamp.com/track/studies-instrumental
48.) Whole Wide World - Radio Trip UK digital-only release off the LP Jalapeno Funk Vol 2 Jalapeno Records 2023
Riding the wave so to speak here as a little more heat and vitality is interjected into the proceedings. Nice laidback urban feel hypnotics, blunted and broken beat dynamics with a cool funky, soulful, jazz fusion wrapped in Hip Hop. Trip Hop sensibilities.
-Slight turntablist approach to the production, crisp and choppy yet warm and bassy in equal measure, nice horns add a little ethnicity to the overall cinematic feel and nice use/placement and processing of samples.
https://jalapenorecords.bandcamp.com/album/jalapeno-funk-vol-2
49.) Stop, Look and Listen - Jazz Spastiks Self Released Digital only UK 2017 off the LP Unkut Fresh Instrumentals
More Hip Hop influence with some sounds that remind me of A Tribe Called Quest. Laidback, sun-drenched US rap on the intelligent/conscious side. sounds like it would sit well in a Nightmares on Wax or Mr Scruff set. Cool soulful bassline and funky influences
- Collide beautifully to create a downtempo groove that is infectious in nature.

50.) Black and White - Nawari Label: LBT Records – LBT-MC 101 Format: Cassette, Stereo Country: Germany Released: 1994, Also a CD release.
Increasing the tropical aspects with further heat and energy, this time with Caribbean feelings overlaid and Reggae undertones at its foundation. Live instrumentation alongside retro-rave, chillout room synths and sampling, a nice fusion complete with an electric rock guitar solo
- To give an 80's retro fusion umbrella to a decent anti-racist protest track.

51.) Rotten Apple - Kingbastard Label: Herb Recordings – HERB036 Format: 17 x File, WAV, Album, Compilation Country: UK Released: Feb 1, 2011, Also on Ambidextrous recordings, Spain on Digital.
Think bastard lovechild of Aphex & William Orbit and you are in the right ballpark, FX & glitched elements, cleverly layered and highly refined, processed bleeps, synths, and samples circle each other in a seductive, sometimes slightly sinister manner. techno at its most chilled and experimental with guitars adding a little Latin flavour at the end.
https://ambidextrousrecords.bandcamp.com/track/rotten-apple (Ambidextrous link)
52.) Gorillaz - Stylo Label: Not On Label (Gorillaz) – STYLO 10 Format: Vinyl, 10", Promo, 45 RPM, White Country: UK Released: 2010

53.) Bells - Bloodline Label: Móatún 7 – MOA095 Format: Lathe Cut, 7"Vinyl, Limited Edition, Clear Country: Iceland Released: Oct 22, 2021
A slight echo back to the original dream-like state at the start of the journey, a reminder from whence we came, so to speak. Laidback and dreamlike electronica with lush, warm pads, buzzing with downtempo resonance, ambient sensibilities with slight ethnic overtones enhanced by subtle steel (hang) drum usage.
- Emotive downtempo that gently smolders as it builds.

54.) The Insatiable Hunger of Forever (with Mark McBrain Bower) - The Stranded Alien / The NTT recording label - S. Korea - from Opera Gargantua 2021
- Analog drum driven beauty with strong cinematic and neo-classical, contemporary jazz elements throughout, Wonderfully emotive generally, with additionally emotional classical piano keys progressively emergent, and building in anticipation throughout. Hypnotic and seductive, excellent warm and full production that sounds like it could sit nicely on the Rome LP from Dangermouse and Danielle Lupi

55.) Trimaxion - maXIon Curavtures vinyl LP 2023 Shall not Fade UK SNFLP012
Off one of my favourite UK labels of recent years but this is much mellower than the majority of their releases. It has a definite old's cool ravers feel to it, great use of sampling which reminds me of the Weatherall remix of Papua New Guinea and it effortlessly incorporates nice spiritual and ethnic elements in choice laidback ambient techno sensibilities.
https://www.discogs.com/release/28398472-maXIon-Curvatures-LP
