I was 17 years old, stationed in West Germany, in an artillery battalion, in the Army. 'RED LEG!!' 155mm, Self-propelled Howitzer...26 Tons, an M109a1. At 123, 133 pounds..I was The Gun Driver. I was in 5th Platoon, 'Blood Barons'. We had a Skull & Crossbones drawn on the front of our Gun. I had to wait 6 months, though. My Platoon's current Gun Driver wasn't giving up the position. It was when he was leaving, 'Short', Platoon Sgt told me to jump behind the wheel. There was something I noticed now, that didn't even come to mind back then, in March 1978. MUSIC!!
Back then, there were no Walkmans just yet. No iPods, not even MP3 Players. But, imagine if there were. If there were, I probably would have so many Article 15s..' Unauthorized Use of Equipment During a Movement...i.e. iPod/MP3 Player.'
I remember the first Reforger I went on, it was 1979. But I was driving a M577 Command Carrier. I was repping FDC, Fire Direction Center. I was transferred to that Section as Radio man, Generator Operator, Chart Operator...and Driver. My Battery, Bravo Btry, represented our Battalion, 2/81 FA, 8th Infantry Division, during Reforger. I think it was called 'Common Frost.' I think it lasted a week or two. But I remember singing Pink Floyd's The Wall to myself while being chased by M60 Tanks.
Man!! I wish MP3 Players had been invented. If I were in the Army, say...in the last 3, 4 years that have passed... I would have re-enlisted just for the music alone...driving heavy ass vehicles.
