Many people do not realize what's behind the Kawaii culture and aesthetic in Japan. It is represented as cute, fun, and happy people. It is mislabeled for much in the western world. Earlier years in Japan, when you are troubled, sad, and depressed you make your outer exterior, the person you want to people to see, as colorful, cute, stable, and happy. The exact opposite of how you are feeling. The person may be depressed and even is contemplating suicide. Nowadays, it maybe easier to spot these people as they now have a Kawaii Fashion Niche of their own, Yami-Kawaii. You'll see them dress darker, and have gory or disturbing fashion accessories such as a syringe necklace and they may even be bold enough to let others plainly see that they are sad and depressed by writing "I Want To Die" all over themselves or clothing.
