Yes. Electronic dance music existed way before the rave scene. Starting from the death of Disco and being born out of the early to mid 80's all the way to end of the 80's and for couple of years into the 90's, electronic dance music or club music was the "It" thing to do and to be seen in for the trendy older 25+ year olds jetsetting in the cities and urban areas. Techno club music, was mostly a European thing as the stateside across the pond, the Americas were trying to recover from Disco, with all that decadence and a place for only the "Special Cool Class of Club Goers" to be a part of ala Studio 54 in NYC. The common people rejected Disco and opted for a new music style of music called "Punk", the antithesis of Club Disco Music. It is now called Eurodance and common characteristics are soulful vocals, synthesizers, going along with consistent beats. This the area that gave birth to stars such as Amber and the meme of a Night at The Roxbury Saturday Night Live Skit.
