Sejd or Seid (Old Norse: Seidr) was a ritual practice in the Nordic religion traditionally practiced by cult leaders: vølver or sejdkoner. In rare cases, it could also be performed by sejdmænd, it created a social stigma. Sejd could be either benign or malignant; benign sorcery could heal or protect and be fortune telling, while the malignant sorcery could cause impotence or loss of zest for life.
Seid could be a "magic" techniques to influence the forces controlled world. The idea of sorcery was based on the notion that the soul had the potential to act outside the body. The ritual usually consisted of a seiðkona or seiðmaðr went into a trance while a helper song special magic songs (galðrar). During the trance could sejderen communicate with the divine or make a spiritual journey to another world. Sejderen could get answers to questions about the weather, diseases, wars, harvest or knowledge to influence the forces that controlled the conditions of life. Sejd was thus a way to get answers to questions relating to the future and well being of society. In the myths was seid especially associated with the Vans gudeslægt, but the Norse god Odin learned it and was described as the largest sejdmager.
Sejd was perceived as a very powerful ritual form that could provide the practicing power over the forces of nature. It was also seen as cross-border, involving unnatural conditions such as sex change, sloughing and travel between this world and the spiritual. It may be the reason for sorcery in the Nordic community apparently had an ambiguous status, where athletes both were feared, respected and looked down upon.
