Hi Everyone . I like to introduce myself to all music lovers: DJBEAR a.k.a DJBERKAND “Purveyor of deep, infectious dance grooves and a feel-good atmosphere.” That’s how Berkand describes himself as a DJ. Never afraid to go too deep, his emotive musical selections are his own therapy. Having grown up on his father’s eclectic combination of Rock N Roll music (Elvis Presley,The Beatles), European pop stars (Mina, Julio Iglesias, Adriano Celentano), synth-infused 80s music (Depeche Mode, Gary Numan)… all which became infused with his own love for both disco, jazz and soft rock music, Berkand ended up with quite a mixed spectrum of musical influence. Today, this translates into sets where he picks apart and infuses together all the pieces of this music that he loves best: beautiful synth work, ethereal backdrops, brooding basslines, and occasional vocal hooks… all on top of a pronounced foot-shuffling house beat. A very active member of Deep House community, Berkand is no stranger to the ups-and-downs of a small-town music scene. Though he loves playing in nightclubs, patios and special events, his love for music goes beyond the spectrum of mixing tunes. As a producer, amateur pianist, and promoter, he has found plenty of ways to express himself musically. I was born in Quebec, Canada. Very young, I developed an interest in dance music, it was always the most rhythmic songs that held my attention on the radio. My first 12 '' I bought was “Love Is In Control” by Donna Summer in 1982, but it was in 1987 that I really started my vinyl collection at a store named Import-O-Son where I also learned the basis of DJing. In 1988 I bought my first mixer that I connected with two family’s turntables. In 1990, I bought my own sound system and my own turntables, I was then addicted. In 1991, I began my series of mix tape called Martymix. I was selling for the bargain price of... $7. I also started my short DJ career; I was doing occasional replacement in a club for teenagers. I also made some mobile disco parties, my biggest being the Christmas party of policemen and firefighter of Quebec City. In 1994, a fire severely damaged my vinyl collection and my sound system. Also, having to start from scratch ended my DJ aspirations. I did get the opportunity to work with Beaugarte’s DJ Christian Pelletier in Ste-Foy. I remember once on a Monday night when there was a lot more customers than usual, I was requisitioned to play music to people who wanted to dance (there was never a DJ or dance on Mondays). This was my last live performance. I eventually returned to school in computer science and started my real career in life. In 2012, being nostalgic of DJing, I bought a small iDJ console to get back in the "beat", but it was not until early 2014 that I really got to work producing a mix of my favorite 50 songs of the year 2013. I then got the idea of reproducing my Martymix tapes with my console, and later launched my series club-a-holic to get in today’s sounds. Although today's technologies greatly facilitate the work of the DJ, I always have great pleasures behind my console and my computer trying to create the best transitions for my listeners.

i started djing at 16 after months of begging the parents for months to buy me some 1210s,which i still use today going strong.my passion in music has to be old school piano,retro and vocal funky house if you cant sing to it then its no good lol.in the early nineties i started going clubbing,and for me to this day was the best for music.when i first got my 1210s i had no intension of djing in clubs it was just a hobby for and for my own enjoyment.i was actually tricked by a fellow dj and good friend who was already djing in clubs,when he phoned me up one thurday night and said he was ill and needed me to help him out and play at a bar for him,to which i found out later it was actually a dj competition to which he entered me and to my surprise i won to which the prize was residency at bradfords biggest dance club which pulled 700 to 800 in every friday and saturday night,my first night djing in the club was christmas eve which was packed out and i was shitting it,it was a big difference mixing some tracks in the bedroom and then to bid audience but i absolutely loved it and was hooked,and so my djing career was born. within the first year things went from strength to strength playing in numerous clubs all over yorkshire and holding down residencys and playing alongside some of the biggest names in the country (alister whitehead,k klass,paul taylor just to name a few) i was more known as a dj for my old school sets and so i was made a resident for retro which took me to ibiza djing at eden and loved every minute. in the mid 2000s i began working with a fellow dj (adam g) at a place called bar me which was just a bar not a club,but in the first 6 months playing there the profits soared 700% and went from a free bar and having to pay in on the door,so we sat down and thought were on to a winner here and decided to brand our own night and event,and so worship was born. our brand of night went from strength to strength holding down rooms at space,gatecrasher,visage and ethios,garlands and many more,we even ended up with our own radio show on a friday night on dvm radio (dance vinyll masters). i think the reason our night worked so well was because we didnt brand it as one style of music it was straight across the board,if it was a classic then it got played. in 2008 we decided to pull the brand as we both wanted to persue over interests,i decided to take a break from djing as it got to a stage where i stopped enjoying it and felt more of a chore going to work instead of doing something i loved. so now im back,loving my music more then ever and back on the scene :-)
