PucK) started his musical journey back in the late nineties in London, Ontario, a city rich in talent when it comes to electronic music. He had the opportunity to observe and open for local DJ’s who were budding stars at the time such as DJ Ruckus, and Greg Benz; who we all know is making an enormous impact on the present day progressive scene with his counterpart Marco Di Carlo as Benz & MD. London’s own superstar John Acquaviva was a staple at the local nightclub as well, giving PucK an opportunity to watch the homegrown legend hammer crowds on a regular basis. This brought forth bucket loads of inspiration to draw from, and he quickly began learning his trade. Just as he was starting to get more and more gigs, PucK ended up moving cities in 2000 to pursue a lengthy rugby career in Victoria with the Canadian National Team. This created new challenges as a DJ in a new town. The tight knit Victoria club scene was proving to be a difficult nut to crack. He started throwing small house parties and quickly amassed a small but very loyal following, which led to bigger and better things as word spread about his energetic and calculated style. Derek rapidly became one of Vancouver Island’s most admired DJs with his flawless mixing skills and impeccable track selection. To date, PucK has graced the stage with some of the world’s top DJ’s; names like Mark Farina or Evil Nine are a couple that instantly come to mind. Now residing in London again, he has recently spent more time in the studio trying his hand at producing; although he has a fair number of edits and remixes already under his belt. “I really want to play my own music when I gig. I played an original at a show a while back, and all I can say is that is was really gratifying when I saw the crowd putting their hands up high, it was a really great feeling,” says PucK. Well, if he is any bit as talented as a producer than he is as a DJ, we can expect some real gems to come out of his labor. Never wanting to settle for a certain genre, PucK takes on various modes from Deep House, to Prog House, to Tech-House, and anything else that will get floors pulsating. You never do know what you’re going to get: a full and powerful dirty hook; or a melodic journey that roars up and bites you. His sets are always packed full of energy and melody, and never a ‘filler’ track in sight. “I try to keep things rolling along with purpose” says the DJ. “I really try to make sure that every track I play possesses some sort of really great element that just grabs people somewhere deep down inside. I don’t want to bore my floors with monotonous noise, I want them to leave extremely satisfied…every time. I feel that they have put their trust in me for the time being, and I owe it to them to bring it home.” When asked what genre he plays, he responded: "good music, it’s this ‘new’ genre that I’m into,” with a cute and silly dimpled smirk. Anyone who has seen him play knows that when he is behind the decks, you should not miss out. If you want to see a DJ that is committed to killing it every time, then look no further.
