The 1984 movie CHUD is one of my all time favorite movies.  It was one of those movies that I loved so much that I recorded it off HBO when I was a little kid.  Before then I wasn't even allowed to watch it because it was deemed "too scary" and you know, it really works well in that area.  The movie seems to be a happy accident as it works better then most horror / zombie movies of its time.  The people making the movie didn't even like it, and yet, the acting is extremely convincing.  What makes the movie stand out is the realistic gritty locations, and the electronic score.  It was actually shot in the subway and the one non-subway location was quality set design.  However we're here for music so lets talk about the score.

The score of the movie was so ahead of its time that even the folks working on the film didn't get it.  It had more in common with French electro acusmatic music then a film score.  The creators of the score used samplers in a way that would later become a staple of rave music, specifically, what Reinforced Records would base their sound on.  Listening to the soundtrack you'll hear 1993 darkside riffs and tones.

The soundtrack was recently _published_ on vinyl and is available on Amazon.  I'm saddened that it wasn't published on a CD or a WAV file download because I really didn't want it on vinyl.  Since this was the only way to get it, I bought it, and spent 2 days de-popping the audio using volume envelopes.

As for this mix, I based the track selection around the CHUD soundtrack which bookends the mix.  2 Bad Mice "Mass Confusion" was the most obvious choice as it uses the same synth sound that dominates the CHUD movie.

A side bar is, I've been trying to find out how to contact either Raymond Bingham (Grooverider) or Simon Smith.  Both have extremely desirable 1993 tracks that were never released.  I even tried contacting Brian Johnson (Bizzy B) since he is/was in contact with them both.  I got nowhere thus far so I took it upon myself to remake Simon Bassline Smith's "Devils" which remains unreleased.  It was pretty easy as there's high quality audio of it on the Grooverider Alive CD.  I just had to make an intro (Nu-Matic - Frequency Fatigue) and an outro (Grooverider Alive CD) and as the brits say, "Bobs your uncle"....

The mix is nice, its all late 1992 darkside which seems to be quite popular judging from the insane price tags on Discogs.  Fortunatly I bought most of them in the 90s and one big record collection which only cost me 200.00
