“Music has always been my passion from a very young age. I started playing musical instruments, later on started dj’ing and that’s how it all started and I fell in love with the skill”. DJ Spectrum started his DJ career by playing around with digital software and teaching himself the basics of the trade. A few years later he saved up some money and used it to buy a brand new set of decks. “I used to lock myself in my room and play for hours, without even realising that so much time has passed.” In 2006 DJ Spectrum entered his first Miller's Draft DJ Competition and was placed in the top 10 DJ's in the Port Elizabeth area. “The achievement was great and I realised that I was making music that other people enjoyed listening to.”
In 2007 the talented DJ started featuring on the club scene with various promoters in Port Elizabeth. For the duration of that year, DJ Spectrum made a name for himself in his hometown, by playing in popular nightclubs such as: The Godfather Supreme, After Party, Escobar, Captains, Gondwana's, Up the Khyber, Virtuals Sports Bar, Atmosfera and La dee da's (the Golden Fountain), all hotspots in and around the city. The PE crowd learned to love the tunes the DJ brought to the dance floor and he became more popular amongst the party animals.
In 2008-2010 DJ Spectrum was invited to play infront of thousands of people at Port Elizabeth's biggest party of the year, The Ultimate Beach Party. “I was honoured to play with various DJ's from the Bay, who have been in the industry for many years. I learned a lot from the experience and will continue to play at all the Beach Parties to come.” In 2009, the highlight of his career took place, when DJ Spectrum won the Bay FM, DJ Search Competition. “I was ecstatic when I won, as I played against the best DJ's in the area. The experience was humbling and I knew my music was meant to be heard.”
The prizes included DJ gear, a resident slot at the Godfather Supreme, as well as a contract as a DJ at the local Radio station, Bay FM. Lastley in 2011 Spectrum won the Viceroy national makoya mix Dj competition which gave him the opportunity to produce his first Debut album.. “I used the opportunity to get exposure and broaden my horizons.”
The opportunity to host the radio show has been very successful. The Audio Airwave Attack takes place from 9-12pm on a Friday night on Bay fm 107.9 . 2010 was a year of accomplishment and coverage. DJ Spectrum also performed at the Splash Festival as well as the 2010 Fifa World Cup. The talented DJ also went on tour in and around the Eastern Cape, with beat boxing champion, George Avakian. It was called the coast to coast tour and the exposure was excellent for the DJ. Spectrum also performed and mixed with 5FM DJ Kent, Roger Goode, Dino Bravo, Euphonik and Fresh. Also the likes of, Ready D, Craig De Sousa in Cape Town, Jamali, Roland Clark (USA), HHP, DJ Codax and many more.
The equipment used by DJ Spectrum starts from his studio at home, Numark ICDX turn tables with a mixer. “ I prefer a vinyl feel, rather the old school feel than the new digital scratch featured equipment.” However he also uses CDJ800', 900 or 1000s, the standard equipment when playing in the club. DJ Spectrum has many goals for the year 2011, these include going national and international with his music. He also plans to present on television and Radio is the first step to get there.
“My music caters to everyone's taste. It is a fushion of Rnb, Hip hop, Pop, House , Afro, Kwaito, Urban Jazz and Deep Funky House. I play for all crowds and enjoy what I play. I interact with the crowd and mix the music well. My style is not conventional, because my music flows...it is all about the flow,” DJ Spectrum
