Drum & Bass for Grannies - Ep 6 - 01-2023

Drum & Bass for Grannies is your monthly show mixed by Diagg with old sounds, new mixes, and 4 decks!
You will hear Drum'n'Bass from 1997 to 2005 (mostly), ranging from Techstep to Neurofunk to liquid funk mixed altogether on four decks to sound fresh !

As Drum'n'Bass for Grannies is a nonprofit show, there is not much financial investment involved, so everything is mixed without a controller using Rekordbox software. Mix Notes:
Happy New Year every one and welcome to this new release of Drum'n'Bass for Grannies.

I'm pleased with this mix, there are a lot of magic moments when the mixing produces something more enjoyable than the tunes themselves, and that's typically what Drum'n'Bass for Granny is all about. For this episode, the vibe is very "Dancefloor" friendly, having a lot of hits and bangers, but also fewer Liquid funk tracks. While this is not something bad or intended intentionally, this is something I'll try to rebalance in the future!
For this episode, I used loops 3 times to enhance my mix. Until now, I used loops to expand too short tracks but now I will also use them as an additional layer of sound. There are plenty of tracks with unforgettable moments that I would love to include but not the just "ok" part of it…
My equalization skill has improved as there is no more track shadowed by the next one.

Noticeable Oldies and discoveries:
The opening track Dj Krust - Re-Arrange is an emotional song with incredible female vocals. Like much of Dj Krust works, it never disappoints at doing things differently. I'm really proud to have it in my mix.

Optical - Hi Tek Dreams and Distorted Minds - Eventual are really special to me, when I started DJ 20 years ago, I played those tunes in my very first set in front of my Dj friends who were all found of techno until they literally stopped everything to come see me mixing when I dropped those tunes. One of my funniest "Oh my god, this what drum'n'bass is all about…" moments!

Peshay - Thankful, heard this 20 years ago or so probably in a Jumping Jack Frost Kiss 100 radio show, never knew it was Peshay, never knew it was dubplate, never knew the original until now but after all, it found its way to my disk bag and I feel so happy about it, what the song express is a very good reminder for all of us, I lost my mother six months ago and those words resonate in me. Big up to the Frost for being the foundation of my liquid funk culture.

Digital & Spirit - Void VIP, stormer for me, the tune played in the set is unfortunately a 192 Kbs mp3 with awful quality, but Digital told me that a remaster was on its way (https://www.instagram.com/p/Clq2DbBKKhk/) !

Visionary - Acid Flex, This one was discovered on this 2001 Ed rush & Optical Set ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=960SCZHEew0). Very cool set that catches the whole Neurofunk vibe of that time.

Dub Element - Neofunk, discovered on a Q-Bert session ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3OGp-m-g6dM). Fun fact; around 50, someone asks if he was producing D&B... You are not ready for the answer…

Stay-C - Russian Dolls, what a tune, I came to it after reading this article (https://ukf.com/words/who-the-hell-is-stay-c/31789).

Hiccups
Optical - Hi Tek Dreams was not started on a 32 bar, which is why the mixing sound a bit cheesy, apologize for that, the same problem also appears with Dom & Roland - Brain Cloud but that is far less noticeable.

The whole mix has too much buzzy sub-base so the version on Hearthis.at is equalized to be more enjoyable. Feel free to ask if you think I cut too many low frequencies…
