Welcome to the world of Mr Jagz.
A Talented and dedicated DJ from an early age, Jagz has grown into becoming one of the most versatile and effective performers around.
Born and raised in East London and Essex, his journey into the world of music, events and performances started in the mid 1990’s and he has never looked back.
Growing up at school, Jagz always had a pair of earphones in his ears, and was always listening to his walkman. Whether it was Steve Jackson on Kiss 100 in the morning or saving all his paper round money for the latest tape from Our Price, Jagz was always listening to something and it was evident at an early age that he had a true passion for music. Whether it was House music, DnB / Jungle or RnB Hip Hop, Jagz was always interested to music that would have an edge… music that just made you feel good. He would happily take his entire tape collections to his friends and family gatherings, and just sit in front of a twin cassette player, playing one song after the other!
His influences at the time were extremely varied. Coming from an Indian background, Jagz has had the benefit of being able to enjoy the best all genres of music, something he feels made him more and more curious and intrigued about mixing.
His first foray into the DJing environment was by being a roadie for a local DJ, who at the time was one of the pioneers and a market leader in the Mobile Discotheque industry. Jagz would go all over the country on the weekends and help to set up the sound systems, the light shows and pyrotechnics. It was during this time that Jagz was first able to get up close to a professional DJ setup… and watch a professional DJ in action. He was hooked. In his mind, he knew that he wanted to be a part of this culture.
Jagz originally started mixing beats and tracks on a PC in the late 1990’s, as he could not afford a pair of turntables… and his dad refused to buy him any! Together with one of his good friends at 6th form, they would both experiment with the sound recorder, and then later, with a wave editor which enabled them to alter the pitch of the track. Jagz quickly became familiar with this method, and started to gain a better understanding of what a mix was and how a mix is done, and started to record his own mixes. However, even though the music sounded great, he was not satisfied that this was it. He wanted to go further with his new knowledge of “how to mix”, and that meant only one thing; he needed to get onto vinyl.
It wasn’t until Jagz went to University in 1999-2000 that things started to move in the right direction for Jagz and there was genuine progression in him.
He made lots of friends who would listen to his PC mixes and be amazed at what he was doing. They collectively encouraged him to attempt to DJ live and properly and were very influential in Jagz following his heart.
By now, there was a pair of Soundlab Belt-drive turntables in the House he was sharing with his friends and a varied selection of vinyl that one of his friends had been collecting. Jagz would spend hours on end practicing his mixing ability using the same tracks, over and over again. During these years, it was all about UK Garage and RnB / HipHop. The friends would go out all over London to different Clubs, bars, parties and nights… and every time, Jagz was interested in one thing only; The DJs.
While his friends would party all night, Jagz would be watching and listening to some of the best DJs around at the time, and taking on board the different styles and skills that they all brought to the arena. He would follow DJs like EZ, Mastersteps, Shortee Blitz, amongst others wherever they were performing, and by listening to these truly great performers, he slowly but surely started to piece together the art of DJing. He understood that there was more to DJing than just playing one song after the next.
Jagz started to get a few gigs here and there for some of the promoters that he had met throug
