POPCOX - lipstick muse, disc jockey, social butterfly and style paradox. Music producer, dress up doll and purveyor of quirk. POPCOX is nearly as infamous for his quirky gender bending outfits as he is for his DJing.
Expressing the spirit of the party through appearance as well as the music selection, Pops offers something unique; energetic, charismatic and creative with wide appeal to a variety of scenes and communities from clubbers to gays, straights, the trans and fetish communities, ourtight weirdoes and even those normal people who may cross his path.
Known by most these days as ‘Pops’ or Poppy (both short for alter ego name ‘Poppy Cox’) the POPCOX project was born in 2008 as his rebellious kick back against a ‘pretentious minimal techno scene’ that was prolific at the time.
As well as a raft of nicknames and moniker’s, since 1998 Pops has enjoyed a diverse international career performing first as Jon Blond allover the West Midlands with an early residency at the now sadly demolished Planet Nightclub in Coventry, then a move to London with residencies at Logo and Chapel Bar. Becoming prolific on the London club, bar and underground party scene and generally running amok earning a reputation for mischief, he quickly rose through the ranks and it wasn’t long before high profile guest performances followed at venues including Fluid, The Cross, The End and Turnmills.
A meeting with Dan Gerrett at his recently started legendary party creation ‘The Cheshire Street Sessions’ in 2002, the pair of miscreants founded DJ/ production duo ‘Cheshire Catz’. The guilty pleasure darlings of the music press, DJ Magazine, Mixmag and iDJ all reported on them while they caused dance floor havoc across the UK with international gigs from Ibiza to the West Coast of Canada. For around five years, a raft of records were released and regular guest slots played at every major London club, they became as familiar as a two-seater sofa in the living room of club music. After wearing out several agents, countless dance floors and each other, the duo split in March 2008 for the sake of musical differences as well as their sanity.
No stranger to dress up and exhibitionism, POPCOX was launched as a two finger salute to the ketamine culture minimal techno scene cursing London in 2007/08. A chance headline gig at leading London club Egg was secured after a throwaway comment in a pub to a promoter friend that went something like “I’m gonna arrange a big party and play proper house music, and, as a f*ck you to anyone who takes themselves too seriously, I’ll do it in drag”. The wild dress up and gender bending was the perfect undercover reinvention away from the spotlight and (all be it very positive) reputation of Cheshire Catz as popular techno DJs. It provided chance to again pursue the more disco and house music styles that had been such an influence for so many years, not to mention have a huge amount of fun at the same time.
Three years down the track and POPCOX is an established act, POPCOX has touched a nerve and organically grown to social icon status to counter culture proving popular with the art, fashion, clubbing, gay, fetish and transgender communities - anyone who considers themselves an individual and likes their entertainment a bit special.
2011 has seen a move towards a modern version of new romantic and androgynous looks along with nu-disco, deep and house sounds with a sprinkling of techno and electro when the time is right. Pops is also working on a solo artist album while also founding a new quirky styling, makeover and photography project called Style Me Quirky inspired by the popularity of the zany dress up aspects of the act.
Since the beginning POPCOX has had a strap line that says it all in 3 words;
