DJ Phillip Kimball is marking his 26th year at the decks, the DJ booth. He began his career in Honolulu in 1990, receiving invaluable tutelage at Fusion Waikiki. Phillip was a natural at the craft of mixing vinyl and quickly made it his second language. When a resident DJ walked out, Phillip got his big break at Fusion. His success and popularity, led to gigs at other venues on Oahu such as Pink’s Garage, Garbos and Dirty Mary’s. But Hawaii could not contain his talent, so Phillip moved to Manhattan in 1991 to continue his schooling, and found work with the venerated Saint-at-Large, not as a DJ, but as an assistant manager at the famous White and Black Parties held at Roseland Ballroom. It was in Roseland where Phillip studied the styles of legendary Saint DJs such as Michael Fierman, Warren Gluck and Robbie Leslie. In 1995 Phillip opened and managed Octave On High, a record store in the heart of Chelsea, which became very popular with fellow DJs and dance music aficionados. When the store closed three years later, Phillip accelerated his thrust into the DJ spotlight, playing at well known venues as the L.U.R.E, the Eagle, Therapy, Webster Hall. Through a series of monthly “Fan Salon” events held in a loft by Larry Krobath, he became popular with the flagging and fanning community, and got to travel to Atlanta, Provincetown, Washington DC and Philadelphia to perform there. In 1999, 2000 and 2001 DJPK got to spin the “Tribe” benefits for amfAR. In 1999, DJPK was hired for the Ice Palace in Cherry Grove. This led to a residency that would last through 2000. Throughout the first decade of the New Millennium, DJPK has been at the heart of advancing the legendary Fire Island Sound, first at the Ice Palace, then in the Pines at the Island Club (now known as Sip’n’Twirl) in a residency which lasted through 2004. He then became a regular spinning Low Tea at The Blue Whale. A major event in his career came in 2009, when DJPK had the honor of spinning the NYC Pride “Dance on the Pier.” In recent years, DJPK has been the DJ for Peggy Weitzman’s “Sassy Bitch” parties at the Stonewall Inn, the Lounge at Elmo and in Cherry Grove. He also has spun several years for Michael Fesco’s Sea Tea and the International Interior Design Association’s “Color Invasion” annual fundraiser (last October marked his fourth). In 2012 DJPK spun a post Black Party event at Cielo and he continues to make plenty of appearances at private parties, corporate events and benefits up and down the the eastern seaboard.
