Underground Revival is an organization founded in the truest traditions of Dance Music from yesterday, today and the future. With a combined catalog of music ranging from the underground to the international, Underground Revival provides a balanced array of music that is second to none. Based out of New York City, this unique tandem of DJ’s combine to bring almost 30 years of experience to the turntables.
DJ Kwab was born in New Rochelle, N.Y. There he discovered his love for DJ-ing as he entertained his young friends by playing music out of his second floor apartment. He quickly realized this was what he wanted to do and hasn't stopped since. His background in African Dance and Music only sweetened this special blend and provided the foundation for a special relationship between himself and the dancers he can so closely relate to. With a musical history deeply rooted in African & African-American Jazz, we can easily identify Kwab's influences in his soulful selections. He has displayed the dexterity to perform for crowds of any musical taste while remaining true to his “house n classics” roots, maintaining a residency at Underground Hip-Hop party “Solutions” (by the creators of the still globally renowned Lyricist’s Lounge parties) at ClubWetalnds. From the small lounges of Club Flowers and Franks Lounge to the hottest nightclubs including the likes of Club Cheetah and Re-Bar, to countless collaboration with some of the underground scenes best and brightest, Kwab has done it all.
Hailing from Brooklyn, N.Y., Josh’s journey lends itself to the musical lineage of his family roots. His grandfather, father, several uncles and countless other family members have (or have had) musical backgrounds that had a great impact on him in his youth. Nearly ready to graduate from high school, Josh spent his days in school, his evenings holding down non-paying production assistant internships in any number of local NY studios, and his nights inside some of the area’s hottest underground night clubs. He worked in studios in efforts to be near music at its conception and went to clubs to witness and be part of the response to the finished product at, what was to him, music’s highest physical manifestation: the dance. His fascination with underground house music in particular, led him to purchase and play this music for whoever would listen. A pair of turntables, a lot of rummaging through his parents music collection and many more crates of music later, we find him taking packed dance floors with him on his journey. Along the way, he’s made stops at venues such as the second Danceteria at which he held a residency for nearly 2 years, Club Bacchus and The Arena amongst others. Soon after, he began to promote and sponsor his own parties – Afro-Juice, Higher Ground and what was likely his crowning achievement to date, assisting in the re-opening of legendary New York underground magnet… Club Marz. Today, his resume boasts countless guest spots at various underground dance music radio stations and what have been hailed as some of New York’s premiere underground night clubs / parties including Sapphire Lounge, Club 205, Club Vanity and regular performances at Brooklyn’s Bang the Party just to name a few.
A chance meeting at New York’s now infamous Sound Factory Bar some years ago has irrevocably bound these two DJ’s at the hip. In their eyes the roots of dance music and the club scene that created the standard set by DJ’s and dancers before them, seemed long since abandoned. Events that led to the eventual shrinkage of the New York scene as they once knew it were the catalysts that led to the founding of this production company. As the name implies, Underground Revival was born of an overwhelming call to help return dance music and the New York club scene to its root: the broad spectrum of underground dance music – not just house and classics – all being heard under the same roof in one night. Since then, they have been able to expand their experiences beyond the trappings of their local scene. In addition to landmark New York clubs and parties such as Caviar Studios, Together in Spirit, the monthly House-Dance-Conference and Turntables on the Hudson, they have been repeat guest-DJ’s on NY radio, numerous internet mix-shows / pages and some of the most talked about venues in Washington DC, Montreal QC (Salon Daomé, Academy, Delima, Stereo Bar, La Panthère Noire) and California among many others They constantly travel to quench the thirst of crowds seeking an aggressive, rare blend of eclectic music. Not satisfied with just playing the music they love, they have taken on producing and remixing tracks to further their goal of expanding the boundaries of dance music. Whether as DJ’s or producers, they unite to present a careful blend of Underground House Music, Soul, Funk, Jazz / Nu-Jazz, Broken-Beat, Down-tempo and some experimental styles of music that truly defy description. Get a room, fill it with musically open-minded people, let Kwab and Josh do what they do best and you are guaranteed to have a night you wont soon forget!
