Bio
I have grown up listining to many kinds of music from a young age, From Jazz to funk and watching films like Beat street, Wildstyle, and breakin etc as a kid and this is what fuelled my love of breaks and electronica. I started to dj at my local youth club around 89 playing early Hip Hop and the Indie sounds of Manchester mixed with Commercial house, But It was MAXIMES in Weymouth around 1990 where i was really introduced, and soon to be hooked on the evolveing Rave Sound that was developing out of the Acid House, Manchester, and the Warehouse scene, i was instantly drawn to the Lasers, Strobeflowers, &smoke, and the Amazeing Drugs people and music, it was like nothing i had ever experianced before in my young life.. from that night on i was set it was my birth into real underground dance music, my mission was to get some 1210s and learn to mix, i got some beltdrive decks in the summer of 1991 off a freind but i used to get very frustrated because i couldnt scratch like i had seen other djs do, nameley Jazzy Jeff etc lol, it wasnt till the end of summer 1991 that i got my brand new Technics Sl1210S. My Dad R.I.P went into debt just so i could learn to mix something i will never forget..
So i started to learn to mix, day and night in my bedroom, strangeley i gained quite a few more freinds when i got my 1210s :) i remember it was quite a bit harder than the old belt drives because the motors were direct drive, but to my delight i could scratch (a little) lol The music was changeing into rave now, i was listining to Carl cox,Top Buzz,Ellis Dee,Colin Dale,Easygroove, Grooverider, heavyley, and then i started to buy the RS belgium stuff that was about, and the Suburban Base and production house Breakbeat Hardcore that was in the shops, which to this day is my main interest..
I got to play my first Rave Gig called PRESSURE at Weymouth Pavillion at the end of 91, orginised but the young Tim Lyall (Slinky) i remember turning up with my records in a carrier bag hahaha, i couldnt afford a record box because i spent what money i had on Vinyl and not much else, well maybe a bit of Red seal :) i remember the other djs looking at me and thinking what is he on with my carrier bag full of records !!! anyway i managed to blag my way on the decks and all those days and nights learning the craft paid off, i smashed my set and i never really looked back, a few weeks later i was playing for another night orginised by Tim Lyall in Dorchester i forget the name of it, but it was a good rave, since then its been a 21 year love hate relationship with buying Vinyl dance music, by the end of 1992 idhad enough but i still listened to Hardcore through 93 but i didnt really buy much of it and decided to knock it on the head for a while, i didnt really like the jungle sound that was evolveing out of the breakbeat Hardcore scene, i didnt start Dj-ing again till around 1994 in a club called the Marqee, this was more Handbag kind of house that i was playing now, i moved on to the the Malibu in 1995 and became the resident there and this was a fun filled time for me i was still playing handbag sort of house but i was also playing what was now classic dance from a few years earlier good times.. whilst i have never played for any of the big promoters i have done my fair share of playing out and in the last year or so theres been the big revival of the oldskool sounds and i have played out quite a bit recently, Pure Klass with Colin Dale in Bournemouth. I also orginsied the Huge MAXIMES reunion back in May 2011 and i truly havent had a night out like it since back in the day, the place was rammed full of real oldskool ravers and Shades of Rhythm smashed there set, along with a host of other local legends :)
