So I’ve done another remix of a song from my teenage years, not because I have to, but because I wanted too and I could 😊
The song will most likely only mean something to Dutch, Belgian and German people, as it is performed by a singer called José (surname ‘Hoebee’ by marriage), who was a member of a quite successful Dutch girl-trio back in the mid-70s and early 80s called Luv’. They even released songs in Spanish and were quite successful in some other countries too besides The Netherlands, Belgium and Germany.
José was the lead vocalist of the Luv’ trio and after the trio split up, she recorded a solo album back in 1981 called “The Good Times”. Now the song I’ve done a remix of, is my favourite song of that album and has the same title as the album: “The Good Times”. It was released in 1982 as the 4th single of the album. It’s a quite old song and there are no multitracks available to the public.
So it required a huge amount of creativity to produce the remix, just like it did when I produced..
- the BZN remix “Just An Illusion ‘24” (RT. 7+ minutes)
- the ABBA remix of “Lay All Your Love On Me” (RT. 9+ minutes)
- and the Carpenters remix of “For All We Know” (RT. 6+ minutes) (which is released on DMC label!)
..amongst several other remixes I produced of classic songs (like two Olivia Newton-John remixes, two Engelbert Humperdinck remixes and a Cliff Richard remix just to name a few). But it’s a nice challenge and those that have been following my production work know that I do like a nice challenge as long as I think it’s doable 😇
Back in the days when José released “The Good Times” as the 4th single of her first solo album, I really loved this song. It sounded fresh and joyful and even up to this day it does. However, I wasn’t happy that they never released a 12” Version of this song. It’s usually the case with songs like this one, they never do a Maxi Single Extended Version 🤷🏼♂️ So, no longer version available, only the single version which is similar to the album version. Such a missed opportunity really.
The first single released from José’s first solo album was an original newly written song titled “I’m So Sorry”. It was not a big hit in the charts. The 2nd and 3rd singles released however were; both are cover versions of classic songs, recorded by José in a dance version (“I Will Follow Him” and “Secret Love”, the latter mostly known in the version performed by Doris Day).
But to me the 4th single “The Good Times” which is also an original new song, was and still is, absolutely THE best song from José’s first solo album!
The original version of the song is 40+ years old and well, unfortunately the audio quality in a way left much to be desired. So please do understand that what I had to work with was not CD quality, but more like (somewhat poor) vinyl quality 🫣 But I have done the best I could to optimise the sound quality in my remix production 😇
I’m now also rectifying the fact that there never was a 12 Inch Version released! 😊😇🎶
Not only did I ‘update’ the sound of the song with my remix production, made it sound more 2024, I also did an Extended Version, my ‘Luciën Vrolijk Extended Clubmix’ that I’m sharing with you here 😃👍🏼
Of course I stayed very true to the original version of the song, I always do, it’s very important to me. Like with the ABBA remix I did of “Lay All Your Love On Me” it will sound as if it actually IS the Maxi Single Version that was never released back in 1982 when the song was released as the 4th single of the album.
PS: if you’re not familiar with the song “The Good Times”, look it up on YouTube, the original single version is on there, that way you can and will hear that I’ve stayed very true to the original version BUT you’ll also hear that it sounds more ‘fresh’ now in the remix I produced AND you’ll hear what’s been done to produce the Extended Clubmix.
Enjoy!
